LOL My love of bees also extends to a love of wasps. I adore wasps, actually - if there's one in the house I feed it honey from my finger.
I'm not an expert on identifying wasps, but that one looks like a queen of a Dolichovespula species - I wouldn't want to guess at the actual species, though it looks a bit too yellow for media, at least to my untrained eyes. But really you need to see them face-on to make a positive identification when you're not an expert!
I wouldn't worry too much about nests - only a tiny proportion of queens survive the winter, and wasps are everywhere. Your odds are probably no higher than anyone else's.
