End of next week: folk festival and housewarming [Jun. 27th, 2006|07:25 pm]

[Music |Kings Of Convenience - I'd Rather Dance With You]

Thank you [info]numberland for pointing this out: Ely folk festival on Saturday 8th. I can give lifts (the last train back leaves at 23:45). The next day I'll host some kind of housewarming BBQish thing from 18:30 (sorry, the garden is otherwise occupied until then, but I'll do another event or two at some point) and am open to suggestions for helping to clean a flat earlier. People from further afield are welcome for all of this; crashspace may be possible, as may dinner on Friday with my family, who are over for the open day, if any Coventry people or others who know them are interested (see comment).

Inevitable second round of tickyboxes )

[Mood | sick]

In future, when seeing the parents (cold-like illness messed up a sailing weekend, but I ended up down there anyway) and given the choice of
  1. getting a train back at some sensible time
  2. getting a lift back on the Monday morning which requires getting up at 06:00
...do not pick b. That is all.

Oh, and Serenity rocks.

cmb does *exercise!* [Mar. 31st, 2005|06:47 pm]

[Mood | silly]

From Thursday to Sunday, I was in the Lake District, with my dad, my aunt, and her family. This mostly involved climbing hills, looking around a bit, and climbing down again, which is actually more interesting than it sounds. Also, geek as I am, it allowed me phone reception at the top, which wasn't possible at the hotel (NSFAnyone with eyes. Oh how it sucks. The hotel itself was quite good though.)

We went:

Friday (map)
from Gatesgarth, up Fleetwith Pike, had lunch by Blackbeck Tarn, up onto Hay Stacks, and, um, sort of chickened out at this point and went down the front of High Crag over to Peggy's Bridge
Saturday (map)
from Glenridding, up Mire's Beck and Grisedale Brow (I think), onto Striding Edge (very busy, strangely enough) with an intermittently cloud-covered view down to Red Tarn, up to the top of Helvellyn, down Swirral Edge, and then from Red Tarn following Red Tarn Beck back
Sunday (map)
...what we *wanted* to do was follow the path NW from that yellow road to Pike of Blisco. I think we ended up wandering about a fair bit and climbing most of Black Crag while we were at it. We never did see anything that really qualified as a path. Then we went down near Red Tarn (a different one) and across somewhere near Long Scar, managing to lose Peter on the way because he was a muppet and wandered off, responding to "wave if you're Peter" by turning and not waving.

By the end of that I was a bit shattered. Since then I've been at the parents', but I'm going back tomorrow morning (Friday) because I *seriously* need to get going with revision.

Edit: map links fixed to use mapsize=big. Oops.

Merry Christmas / Seasons Greetings [Dec. 25th, 2004|10:20 am]

I wish you better luck with today than we're having here. My aunt's oven failed, so she and her family are now on their way to visit us, instead of the other way around, and we're getting ready in a hurry. The best laid plans of mice and men...

A rare sighting of the lesser-spotted wet cmb... [Sep. 11th, 2004|08:44 pm]

Sailed today with my dad at Grafham Water (near Cambridge as I suddenly noticed today). Or tried to. It went from force 3-4, which is pretty good for the two of us in a Spice, to force 6, which, um, isn't.

We sailed in on just the jib (for the landlubbers, that's the little sail at the front that doesn't have much power). It was still quite hard work keeping the boat level. On just the jib. I was considering trapezing, in fact. On just the jib. I think you get the point by now. :-)

It was forecast to be even windier tomorrow, so we called a halt to the weekend's sailing, which was a shame, but better that than hanging around for ages tomorrow saying "yes, it is, in fact, still too windy".

Moment of the day: when I suddenly realised I'd parted company with the boat...
<dad> where do you think you're going?!
<cmb> I thought I'd just go for a swim.

Debian Party 2004 [Aug. 30th, 2004|09:48 pm]

[Tags|, , , ]

There was a party, and it was nifty. Met people I hadn't seen for ages, much geeking about much assorted stuff, and a good bbq too. Much karma to Steve McIntyre for letting an invading army of debianites wreck his house yet again. :-)

Oh, and I finally got my machine up to speed with halfway-recent software. For those of you who don't know, I'd been holding it back on XFree86 4.2 and kernel 2.4 for many months, basically to avoid losing 3D support so I could carry on playing TuxRacer. I was starting to get a lot of comments... anyway I discovered that by getting XFree86 from DRI CVS I could get X 4.3.99 with the Savage driver. Which is good.

I'm currently taking a break from my sister's 18th birthday party. She's somehow managed to hold it almost 3 months early... anyway there are a load of people her age sitting around getting progressively more inebriated and listening to "music" most of which is, imho, crap. Excuse my french. Not really my scene... not quite sure why she wanted me to come. *shrug*.

Back at uni :-) [Jan. 3rd, 2004|08:50 pm]

[Mood | excited]

I'm now back at Warwick, about to start term 2. It's good to be back, with friends nearby and LAN parties looming invitingly on the horizon. I have coursework to polish and submit, and then there's the matter of the group project. This is something that happens over the course of this term, with groups of 6 (I'm a group leader), and even though my group already has a significant head start on it, it'll be tough since some of the others involved... let's just say they need reminding occasionally to get things done on time. :-)

Still... Christmas was great, but it's definitely good to be back. :-)

Setting up stuff for parents' anniversary party: 4 hours
Being at the party with a bunch of people of my parents' age of the "I'm really supposed to know who they are but I don't" variety: 6 hours (until 2am...)
Clearing up the fallout, debris, and general chaos this morning: 2 3 too many hours

Finally being in front of a terminal again and finally getting a working 3D acceleration driver for this machine after months of waiting: *priiiiceleeessss* :-)

Cornwall tomorrow, yay! [Jul. 31st, 2003|09:13 am]

[Mood | bouncy]

Going to Gillan, sailing with my family in a couple of racing dinghies and an old wooden GP14. Oh, and there's a kayak too. In short, sun, sea, more sea and pasties. :-) The only bad thing about it, in fact, is the total lack of a net connection of any kind for a whole two weeks... but then, I suppose it doesn't hurt to do that once a year. I fully expect every mailbox I have to be full and rejecting messages by the time I get back, so if you're here from my homepage, looking for a way to contact me and all messages are bouncing, have patience until the 15th, when I'll return. :-)

When I do get back, I'll be off fairly quickly to the Debian 10th birthday BBQ weekend in Cambridge, which should be great fun. 25 people and rising last time I checked.

So... *deep breath* this is cmb, signing off... for two weeks... *wibble!*

[1]+ Done make shed [Jul. 27th, 2003|09:00 am]

[Tags|, ]
[Mood | exhausted]

The evil shed of doom (tm) is finally finished. Well, it has a roof on it anyway, and I won't be needed for the remaining fiddly bits. I've decided this is definitely a Good Thing, especially since the weather outside is now... *checks*... still likely to rain the second anyone goes outside (had to put up roofing felt quickly in the rain yesterday, not good). Anyway, all done. Nothing to interrupt coding today. :-)

[Mood | drained]

..which is good, since I'm heavily involved in that build process. :-)

End of a long, tiring weekend at last; I spent all of it helping my dad build a shed/garage/... wooden building thing. Most of the tricky stuff is done now, so at least next time he can rope in one of my not-so-tall siblings instead, if he's feeling considerate. Holding bits of wood steady 6m in the air standing on the top rung of a wobbly ladder is *not* something I enjoy doing, I've decided. :-p

Oh well, any second now I'll be eating some *gorgeous* pastizio (greek dish a bit like lasagne). Mmmm... :-D

Catamarans are good. :-) [Jul. 12th, 2003|10:14 pm]

[Tags|]
[Mood | exhausted]

I've just got back from a day learning to sail this lovely catamaran, at the Hobie centre in Poole. It's halfway across the country, so I was dragged out of bed at 5:45 am to go there, but it was definitely worth it. :-)

There were some great comedy moments with the average water depth being about 5 feet... mostly this didn't matter, since this boat had no daggerboard or centreboard, but every so often the rudders popped up, and had I jumped out anywhere, I would have been able to stand up... when we did capsize drill, the fact that we could stand up and get at least head and shoulders above the deck did spoil the effect slightly. :-D

I've decided I like catamarans now... very stable, they work in a lot of different wind conditions, and they're very beach-friendly. They don't take long to rig, either.

Anyway, especially after the early start and everything, I'm about to fall over. *falls over*... definitely worth it though. :-)

Bored thread [Jul. 11th, 2003|01:48 pm]

[Mood | lonely]

Need another TLP, if only to dispel the previous one's doom, gloom, and... more doom. Nothing much happening atm. Some coding, some tech support for people (more of that on Monday), ... boredness, loneliness, general not-being-at-uni-ness.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, I'm going sailing with my dad and my sister, learning how to sail catamarans, which should be great fun. :-) This time next month, I'll be in the middle of a sailing holiday, which will be even better, assuming the british weather doesn't spoil it all *touch wood*. Then another huge empty void-like gap of nothingness, then finally back to uni at the end of September. :-)
