Yesterday and a meme [Apr. 6th, 2006|12:41 pm]

[Mood | silly]

I went to London with [info]linamishima and Chloe, caught up a lot, had a complete stranger join in with a conversation about Eclipse, ate all-I-could-eat pizza, played DDR (EZ2 variant), escaped some very [info]customers_suckish angry people, saw Waterloo station for the first time since a french exchange years ago, ate apple pancake, watched the Thames a bit and caught up some more over hot chocolate on the train back. All good fun, except for the bit with the locals.

I hesitate to post this meme, because although I can make passable use of The GIMP for a lot of editing tasks, I don't feel confident about actually composing anything from scratch. Still, practice makes perfect, I guess.

  1. Comment here and I'll pick one of your LJ interests and draw a picture using the mighty MS paint GIMP. I don't have Paint. Well, I have access to it, but, um, really...
  2. You have no say in what I draw for you, or in how much it will suck!
  3. Put this in your journal along with the pictures people drew for you. (nonobligatory)

[Mood | ill]

If you read this, even if I don't speak to you often, please post a memory of me in a comment. It can be anything you want, it can be good or bad, just so long as it happened. Then post this to your journal. See what people remember about you. Or not.

Also I have the dreaded Lurgy (± spelling) or something, since Friday evening. Headache, sore throat, etc etc, no fun.

Well that was all just a little silly [Dec. 22nd, 2004|02:15 am]

[Mood | bouncy]

What started as a quick visit to join people for a few hours became a delayed visit (thank you lack of rail-replacement buses and uninformed staff at MK and a freezing 30min change in Bedford), which was nonetheless great fun, for 2 days. Found nattie, went to the Regal with lizzie and friends, chatted a bit, was approved of I think (yay), was plotted at, got a haircut, coffee with nattie, found DrWatson's present, lurked at a Debian gathering for a bit, stayed at YHA, found nattie and dave (lurking variety), watched Phantom of the Opera (film version, good but has minor changes) with lizzie, went to the Carlton, caught the very last train (no really, the only thing on the departure boards of Birmingham New Street by the time I was there), got back, panicked about phpBB a bit, and *collapsed*.

Muchly fun though. :-)

[Mood | cheerful]

Specifically:

  • A ceilidh! With [info]lizzip and [info]tea_cantata, organised by this lot. Great fun, and I shall be looking at the ceilidh soc here at Warwick...
  • Some Bug Squashing (thanks Steve McIntyre for being such a good host yet again)
  • Some assorted silliness (an idiot? easily summonable? maker of flimsy excuses? who, me? well, yes...)
  • A lift back to Coventry with Chris Halls (thanks), OpenOffice person, at whose suggestion I shall be attempting to help out where I can with OpenOffice bugs, since I do actually find it useful quite often.

Now I seriously need to sleep. Good night everyone. :-)

A Very Bad Day [Nov. 17th, 2004|03:26 am]

[Tags|, , , , ]
[Mood | annoyed]

zeus has been crashing far more than previously the past few days, by which I mean that firefox, xmms, gkrellm, and occasionally the entire X server have been falling over. Also, very occasionally, the entire machine hardlocks. About as often, I get display corruption (an xterm's cursor will repeat at some other point on the screen). Graphics card swap didn't help.

So I ran memtest86+. Seems one of my RAM sticks had 152 errors on it. I shall be RMAing that in any case. One swap later... and things still seem to fall over. I give up. Some time soon I shall stop trying funky nvidia driver options and get some sleep...

And all this while I need to be doing web development for various reasons, and project work, and... gah. Perhaps we'd all be better off with abaci.

And the good news? Well, there was PretzelMeet III, that was good. Things like that help keep me (in)sane (depends which is which under your preferred terminology).

[Mood | embarrassed]

I meant to update a while ago... never quite got around to it. So... *deep breath* I've been:

  • poking things on zeus, far too much, including getting VMware set up (yay! XP sandboxed into a process and I can carry on with other stuff outside it! yay!)
  • doing some more part-time web work
  • working on my 3rd year project (enough, but not nearly as much as I wanted to)
  • fixing remaining fallout from the CompSoc server move
  • occasionally finding time to sleep :-)

Oh, and yay! Impending PretzelMeetMk3! yay! ... *looks at practically a page full of entries that mention Cambridge*... *looks a little embarrassed*... *shrugs*... also, if anyone knows a faster way to get there from Coventry on a Saturday morning than the train to Euston and up from Kings Cross, that'd be great.

Oh, and I've started a recipes thing in the CompSoc wiki.

New PC! [Oct. 25th, 2004|07:48 pm]

[Mood | bouncy]

First things first... PretzelMeetMk2 was had. It was good... others have done better write-ups already, but suffice to say we actually made pretzel-shaped things this time, and much fun was had by all.

In other news, with atlas having gone phut (dead hard disk), I decided finally to move to a desktop machine. It is now working. It is called zeus. It is good. I've been poking all sorts of things, getting my data across, ... the one annoyance is, that it doesn't support all my memory. I have 2GB in the form of 4 512MB sticks, and the board has 4 slots. So I plug it all in, and obviously I get... 1GB. Argh. Turns out slots 3 and 4 only support single-side RAM when both are used. Silliness. However, I can just take a stick out and have 1.5GB, which is nearly as good. Unfortunately, this seems to apply to all NForce2 boards, and those are pretty much the only good boards for Athlons. Oh well. That aside, things work wonderfully. :-)

I'm now going to be really lazy... [Oct. 11th, 2004|12:58 pm]

[Mood | bouncy]

I could tell you about the various attempts at cooking, some more successful than others. I could tell you about the random drive around the area to the east of Cambridge. I could even tell you about the highly enjoyable concert that was the excuse for the whole weekend in the first place. But Clive ([info]gerald_duck) made a much better job of it than I ever could.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. The only slight annoyance was having to catch a train at 0730 on the Saturday morning to get to it all. The quickest route seemed to be via Euston and King's Cross. Whilst this does give me the opportunity to pass by the entrance to Platform 9 ¾, it also hikes up the price of the ticket and any mid-journey drinks or snacks, and involves far more hopping between trains than is necessary.

On the Sunday, I had been offered a lift so I had an excuse to remain in Cambridge for another day. Exploring Cambridge is always fun, and this time I emerged with The Complete Robot (Asimov), DVDs of A Beautiful Mind and Cypher, and having seen Collateral.

Tired... but it was good :-) [Sep. 20th, 2004|11:08 am]

[Tags|, , , ]

I've been in Cambridge for most of the weekend, ostensibly to hear [info]tea_cantata sing, but also for much fun stuff before and after. I had a lot of good music pimped at me, including some Latvian folk-pop and a highly brain-breaking German cover of [censored], and I briefly met her friend Isa, whom no introduction can do justice.

The singing itself was rated "pretty horrific" by the choir, since apparently they messed up the end of the anthem. It seems I wasn't musical enough to notice; I thought it was all quite good.

'Twas good fun. Must go to more of these gatherings (afpmeets also). :-)
